Health Care Bill and Congressman George Miller

I sent Congressman George Miller my thoughts about the current health care bill.  I don’t believe the federal government should be involved with every aspect of health care.  It should never exceed the state level of government.  There are too many variables from region to region to think that a health care bill for the entire nation would be the best option for everyone.  I agree with the following: existing conditions should not keep someone from receiving treatment;   anyone that does not have insurance should have some form of basic insurance; and abortion is wrong.  I believe that life begins with conception.  We should not ignore the possibility of creating life through intercourse.  Once conception occurs, it is then God’s choice to provide the spirit for that body, which spirit and body become the soul of all living.  When God provides that body with a spirit, that soul then has three equal caretakers: God, the mother, and the father.  God then has equal say in the life and future of that soul, even before birth.

Congressman George Miller sent me the following letter in response to my comments:

Thank you for contacting me to share your views regarding health insurance reform.

As you know, the House and Senate have passed differing versions of health insurance reform legislation, bringing health insurance reform closer to reality than at any time in the last 70 years. While there are clear differences between the bills passed by the Senate and the House, both bills will bring peace of mind and fundamental health insurance coverage to millions of Americans who are currently uninsured.

The recent election result in Massachusetts doesn’t change the fact that there is a health insurance crisis in America. We must address this crisis.

Access to affordable health insurance is fundamental for any individual and family. Our bill would make the coverage people have today more secure and affordable, it would extend coverage to 36 million Americans without it, and it would ensure that never again will you or your family go without health insurance in the event of a catastrophic life event like losing or changing your job or experiencing a serious illness. These are guarantees that do not exist today.

With the recession, the ranks of the uninsured and the underinsured are swelling. And even those who do have health insurance are at risk of crushing financial burdens from astronomical health care costs and rising health insurance premiums that make up a growing part of both business and personal spending. Comprehensive reform is essential to addressing these problems and reviving our economy.

President Obama and a majority in both the House and Senate remain committed to enacting fiscally responsible health insurance reform that provides greater affordability, accessibility and accountability to American families and businesses. With the loss of the 60th vote in the Senate, we are exploring the means by which we can enact needed reform, to strengthen what works and fix what does not in our uniquely American system. We are not backing away from our commitment to a responsible and balanced bill.

Over the past few months, I have posted a great deal of information about the details about our plan on my committee’s website – http://edlabor.house.gov – where you can read a summary or the whole bill itself, watch video, and find other background materials.

Both bills will slow the growth of out-of-control health care costs and reduce the deficit by over $100 billion in the first ten years – and by much more in the second decade. Both bills will make unprecedented reforms to the insurance industry to hold insurers accountable and protect consumers from delays or denials of care based on pre-existing conditions, from rescissions, and from exorbitant out-of-pocket expenses that bankrupt far too many Americans. Both bills will protect and expand peoples’ choices of doctors and health plans. And both bills will offer relief to small businesses getting crushed by spiraling health costs.

The path to reform has been made more difficult by the Massachusetts election, but the need for reform has become no less urgent.

What the House has been fighting for, and what we will continue to fight for, are reforms that will provide quality, affordable health insurance for the American people and offer security for families and businesses across the country.

I will continue to work with the Senate and the White House to reconcile and further improve our bills. I am committed to producing a final bill that incorporates the best reforms for middle-class families, small businesses, seniors and our fiscal health, stays true to the values of our members and delivers on the changes the American people desperately need.
